From the Sideline to the Sweet 16: Jenna’s Journey Through ACL Recovery
For many athletes, their sport isn't just a hobby; it’s their identity. That was exactly the case for Jenna Johnson. As a high-level Wayzata basketball player being recruited by Division 1 schools, her life revolved around the gym. But in a single, split-second pivot, everything changed.
We sat down with Jenna to talk about her recovery journey at Accelerated Sports Therapy, the mental hurdles of a long-term injury, and the incredible career she built after stepping back onto the court.
The Moment Everything Changed
Jenna was on a fast break, the kind of play she had executed thousands of times. She planted her foot to pivot and throw the ball out to the 3-point line.
"When I planted, my knee felt like it exploded," Jenna recalls. "I fell to the ground right away. When my coach came out, I remember telling him, ‘I don’t know, but I think something tore.’"
The diagnosis was a torn ACL and meniscus. Because of the meniscus tear, Jenna faced eight weeks of non-weight bearing; a grueling start to an already long road.
The Mental Battle of the Sidelines
The physical pain was one thing, but the shift in identity was another. For an athlete used to being the engine of her team, being stuck in a knee immobilizer was a trial.
"Basketball gave me purpose," Jenna says. "I really struggled being on the sideline, but it also pushed me to find purpose outside of the game and have more assurance in who I was beyond just being a basketball player."
Grind in the Clinic
To regain the muscle she lost during those eight weeks of non-weight bearing, Jenna and her physical therapist, Mike, turned to Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training.
"I hate to say it, but BFR made a huge difference. I would dread the days I had to do it, but it helped me grow my quad muscle in a different way. It didn't just make me stronger faster; it made me mentally stronger having to push through the discomfort."
Working with Mike was a game-changer for Jenna. She needed someone who understood that she wasn't just trying to walk again; she was trying to compete at the highest level of collegiate sports. "Mike fully understood the demands of basketball. He pushed me hard but was always there to encourage me on the hard days."
The Turning Point
Recovery isn't a straight line. Around the 4-to-5-month mark, Jenna started running again, but it didn't feel right yet.
"It was discouraging because it didn’t feel the same, and I questioned if it was ever going to feel good again," she admits. "I knew if I stopped working hard, I wasn’t going to get better. I just put my head down and kept at it. Sometimes time and hard work is really the best healer."
A Career for the History Books
When Jenna finally stepped back onto the court during her senior year at Wayzata, she didn't just return - she thrived. The confidence she built in rehab allowed her to play without fear. That foundation led to an outstanding college career at The University of Utah that would have been impossible without her dedication to physical therapy.
Jenna’s post-injury stats are inspiring:
128 consecutive starts (every single game of her career).
4 straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
A trip to the Sweet 16.
A PAC-12 Regular Season Championship.
Jenna’s Advice to Athletes
If you’re currently staring down a long rehab process, Jenna has a simple mantra for you: Control the controllables.
"Getting injured sucks, and recovering from an ACL is a long process, there’s no way around that," Jenna says. "However, you’re going to get out what you put into it. If you show up each day and push yourself, the rest will take care of itself."
